Totes Quotes – The Terminator

Totes Quotes - The Terminator Cover

Quote: “It’s not what you say, it’s the way you say it!”

If I had a quid for every time I’d heard that, I’d be a rich, rich man. Trouble is, it’s not exactly accurate is it? Great dialogue transcends the performance from whence it came and has the ability to infiltrate popular culture and consciousness.

From the endlessly quotable to the words you wish you’d said yourself, each week will feature an iconic iteration. So in the words of Reservoir Dogs’ Joe Cabot…”Let’s go to work!”

Blood, guts and gore. If there’s one thing that 1984’s The Terminator has got more of, it’s quotable dialogue. Or maybe heavily hair-sprayed bouffants and shoulder pads, but that’s not why we’re here.

From Kyle Reese (Michael Biehn)’s compelling call-to-action of; “come with me if you want to live” to the T-100 (Arnold Schwarzenegger)’s surprisingly subdued “I’ll be back,” quotes from the franchise’s first offering are used the world over in all sorts of (mostly inappropriate) situations. Come on, you’ve all done it.

But there’s one quote that puts its fist through the rest – whilst probably breaking every bone in its hand – and it’s Reese’s equivalent of saying “right, real talk”…

“Listen, and understand! That Terminator is out there! It can’t be bargained with. It can’t be reasoned with. It doesn’t feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop… ever, until you are dead!”

With those few well-spat sentences, James Cameron, Gale Anne Hurd and William Wisher Jnr. created an iconic character who couldn’t even be stopped by a spate of shite sequels. The rudimentary and relatable language broke through the Sci-Fi gubbins and made more of an impact that anything to do with a “hyperalloy combat chassis.” It was also pretty useful when you wanted to described the hardest kid in your playground.

Having said all that, Sarah Connor’s hair though…swish!
